With an opera as wildly popular as Puccini’s classic Madama Butterfly, it can be difficult to create a production that approaches the work in a new way. New York City Opera‘s Emmy Award-winning production is doing just that.
The production, directed by Mark Lamos, is relatively minimalist compared with the extravagant displays that have become customary with this opera. Everything has been stripped down to get to the heart of the story. As Artistic Administrator Cory Lippiello explains: “It really puts the emphasis on the moment-to-moment choices, the emotions the characters have.”
