An Unexpected Muse for an Unexpected Collaboration

David Byrne and Fatboy Slim‘s musical collaboration was unexpected, to say the least. In their new concept album, Here Lies Love, they feature another unlikely star: Imelda Marcos. Imelda Marcos is the glamorous widow of president Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines. Imelda Marcos became a political figure in her own right, but she is internationally famous for her love of night life and shoes. She reportedly had over 3000 pairs of shoes, many of which are now housed in the Shoe Museum in Marikina City.

Here Lies Love was released on April 6 2010 on Todomundo/Nonesuch Records and features artists including Santogold, Martha Wainwright and Florence Welch (from Florence and The Machine) among many others. It is also being developed into a dramatic piece for The Public Theatre! We look forward to hearing more about that as the project develops.

For now, check out this video of the first song on the Here Lies Love album, “Please Don’t.”

I saw an ad for this in the New Yorker and thought it was a joke!
